The Labrys Lesbian Flag was actually created in 1999. The design incorporates a labrys, which is a double-headed axe, superimposed on an inverted black triangle, all set against a violet background. The labrys has historical associations as a weapon used by the Amazons in mythology. During the 1970s, it was adopted as a symbol of empowerment by the lesbian feminist community.
In Nazi Germany, women who were considered asocial, including homosexual females, were deemed unfit according to the Nazi ideal of womanhood. They were condemned to concentration camps and were forced to wear an inverted black triangle badge to identify them. In a similar way that gay men reclaimed the pink triangle as a symbol, some lesbians also reclaimed the inverted black triangle as a symbol of resistance and solidarity.
The color violet became associated with lesbians through the poetic works of Sappho, an ancient Greek poetess known for her writings on love and desire between women. The connection between violet and lesbian identity has endured over time and is represented in the Labrys Lesbian Flag. 🤍💜🖤
