The neon sign of the Stonewall Inn has become a symbol of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Though the sign wasn't present during the historic 1969 Stonewall Uprising, it now represents the bar’s enduring legacy. After the Stonewall Riots, which sparked a mass movement for LGBTQ+ equality, the inn itself went through several changes, including periods of closure. When it was reopened in the late 1980s, the neon sign was installed as a visual marker of the bar's history, identity, and significance in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
The neon sign not only brightens the front of the bar but also serves as a lasting tribute to the resistance and unity that began on that site. The bar and its surroundings, including Christopher Park, were declared a National Monument in 2016, recognizing their importance in American civil rights history.
