Uncle Charlie's North, originally part of the Uncle Charlie's chain of gay bars, was a well-known LGBTQ+ establishment in New York City. The bar was popular in the 1980s and was particularly noted for attracting a young professional crowd with its modern decor and video screens showcasing music videos. It became a gathering place for many during a time when being openly gay was gaining more social acceptance.

Uncle Charlie's North was not just known for its vibrant social scene but also for its brush with infamy. Its owner, Louis Katz, became notorious in 1986 for his involvement in a love-triangle murder. This tragic event and Katz’s subsequent 13-year flight from justice added a dark chapter to the bar's history, reflecting a period of turmoil in the LGBTQ+ community.

Despite these dramatic incidents, Uncle Charlie’s held a significant place in the gay nightlife scene of the time, helping to solidify music icons like Madonna and the Pet Shop Boys within the LGBTQ+ cultural sphere. Unfortunately, the bar also became a target of violence in 1990 when it was bombed by a radical group protesting homosexuality. This attack led to increased activism, including the rise of Queer Nation, a group dedicated to fighting homophobia.

The history of Uncle Charlie’s is a mix of joy, community-building, tragedy, and activism, marking it as a significant, though now-closed, chapter in New York City's LGBTQ+ history.
